MidasPhoto Reviewer's Comments

MidasPhoto has been discontinued

Ease of Use:

MidasPhoto is fairly easy to use. It's not the prettiest design that we've seen in a program but it's simple and straightforward.

Importing:

Before you can use the program, you have to enter your email address. They say that it is not going to be shared but you will have to subscribe to the newsletter. MidasPhoto automatically imports photos from your digital camera, removable device like a digital camera storage card or a scanner. You can also take screenshots of a window or the screen with this program.

Editing:

The major drawback to this application is that it does not have very many editing features. In fact, it doesn't even have a remove red-eye function. This is the only program that does not have this function of the 18 that we reviewed. The editing features are called "filters" and they are: Lighten, Darken, Gamma, More Contrast, Less Contrast, Soften, Sharpen, Blur, Grayscale and Sepia. There is no way to manually adjust anything. There is also no way to see the effect. You just have to do it and then undo and try again if you don't like it. You can also rotate, resize and crop.

Sharing:

With MidasPhoto you can share your photos through email, print or on the web. There are 8 templates you can use to create a web gallery. To email, you can email an entire album to other MidasPhoto users or just send the pictures as a zip attachment.

Output Capabilities:

There is only one format to save your photo in-Jpg. There aren't even any options for customizing the compression.

Organizing:

The organizing capabilities are probably its greatest strength but it still doesn't match up well compared to others we reviewed. You can view thumbnails of any image that you copy from a digital camera or browse from you hard drive or other device. You can also change the file names and add captions and descriptions. There is no way to view additional information like the digital camera EXIF data.

Help/Support:

The application help is text-only. There are also some "Tips of the day". There is an online tour that shows screenshots of the program and offers brief descriptions of the main functions. There is also an "FAQ" page online that had one question and one answer. If you need additional help, you can fill out an online form.

Summary:

With the limited feature set that this product offers, it doesn't match up to the competition. There are easier to use, more powerful options available. Of course, if you are on a tight budget, this is the cheapest product on the market.
